The homeless population in Humboldt Park's namesake park has exploded during the pandemic. Local officials are scrambling to match residents with housing and medical care. “The number of people that we see defecate in our alley …,” Duncan said. “In our building, we’ll all text each other and be like, ‘There’s another one just passed out in the alley.’ And at what point in time does the commitment to these individuals kick in? When does the respect kick in?”

The police used to circle the park making sure everyone was out by 11:30pm. The park closes at 11:30pm. The police do not enforce this anymore. Now the homeless are there pooping and urinating in the pond where the ducks, fish and geese are. They are washing their ass and other parts in the sprinklers where the kids play. Kids watched a man ruthlessly kick a woman out of his tent. Some Of them are sick on heroin and laying on the ground. A couple of them died of an overdose. They are homeless because they are drug addicts or they are mentally ill. Work 40 hours at $15/hr and make $2,400 a month that leaves you with $1,200 month after paying rent.

Chicago and Illinois politicians should be given a shovel to pick up after their defecation.
Today is August 1 – still warm outside. In a few months the park vagrants will have to pack up and move along.

Or stay in Chicago and just be homeless someplace other than this public park?
Do they move to some ‘Chicago’ homeless shelter that’s also available now, it’s just that they’d rather live in a park in the spring, summer and fall?
Considering the billions-n-billions of tax dollars we already spend on homelessness, I think it’s an outrage that guvmn’t just can’t seem to keep it from getting worse.

OOOH BOY! Is this just getting started. The Progressive see’s the world in Victim and Victimizer terms, nothing in between, that’s why they’re always “having to fight the…” They are in capable of fixing homelessness on the streets because doing so would make them, in their mind, Victimizers, so any type of coercive measure’s they may need to take, are OUT. See the author of the book; SanFransicko, Michael Shellenberger, he has a YouTube video titled: Why Progressives can’t fix homelessness. It’s excellent and exasperating. Buckle up cowboy.
“People experiencing homelessness”would be more aptly described as bums.
The word “commitment” is not the correct word here. The word “committed” as in committed to a mental health institution needed to be used.
Tent city will be gone when it gets cold.
No it won’t. They stay all year being disrespectful to children and families who use the park the way it is intended for. They should have set up somewhere else instead of being selfish and being homeless in the beautiful park.
