Cash bail became more and more problematic as trial dates months-n-years after arrests became the new normal.

Along with a lot of other negative opportunity costs that can be attributed to the truth of the old ‘Justice delayed is justice denied’ saying.

Thing is, seems to me that eliminating cash bail just makes it easier for the courts to do nothing about, and avoid criticism for, how long it takes them to actually bring a criminal to trial.

The solution will be concealed carry holder’s responding to the criminals. If the police can’t do it and the prosecutors won’t prosecute then……the second amendment takes over. I lived in Manhattan in the early 1980’s. A Chicago Bernard Goetz response is inevitable. Broken window policing works.

I agree completely. Broken window policing does work.

The concealed carry people will be the ones prosecuted; don’t forget this is Illinois.

95% of the population isn’t impacted by changing these bail rules…because they aren’t criminals and don’t use bail. But now, 95% of the population will be impacted with the revolving door for criminals this action creates. Ridiculous.

now crime will spike even more, and time to blame the law abiding, peaceful gun owners. Time to disarm the citizens (oh wait, already did that)….

Is there anything in IL government that isn’t corrupted? Surprising that the state supreme could put such ‘applesauce’ forward with a straight face.

I do not feel pity for the fool who goes into the city for entertainment or shopping. You have been forewarned about doing so by the democrats and the supreme court. Do so at your own risk. I feel for the mom or dad trying to raise a kid in troubled neighborhoods under these circumstances. The gangs will have much greater influence over your kids, as the gangbanger will be free to remind your kid who is boss for the 3 plus years it takes to have a trial in cook county. Very few, other than WP, have mentioned the… Read more »

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
