In 2025, Illinois allocated $2.6 billion in general funds to colleges. At the same time, the state was projected to spend only $148.7 million in general funds on apprenticeships, pre-apprenticeships and workforce training – less than 6 percent of the college funding.
It would be great to develop the skilled labor workforce, but Illinois is already losing the jobs to surrounding states. Many manufacturing facilities are transferring production elsewhere. Illinois has consistently let manufacturing leave with barely a comment.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
