Illinois’ low social mobility: causes and cures – Illinois Policy

A low-income person’s ability to move up in society is worse in Illinois than in any other Midwestern state, and 40th lowest nationally. Illinois is below average on each of the four aspects determining social mobility: entrepreneurship and economic growth, institutions and the rule of law, education and skills development, and social capital.

There’s always a red state to improve one’s mobility. Just leave any tendencies to vote Democratic in Illinois.

It doesn’t help that private interests that invest money ignore huge swaths of Cook County and the rest of Illinois. And in many cases it’s the politicians that are to blame – they direct investment to their pet projects instead of critical economic infrastructure.

It’s a misunderstanding of the issues to suggest they ‘ignore’ huge swaths of Cook County and the rest of Illinois. Its more like they’ve made the conscious decision NOT to invest here because there are better opportunities elsewhere.
