Illinois schools chief tells districts to follow state law, not Trump threats – Chalkbeat Chicago

A man in a suit poses for a portrait while sitting at a wooden table near a window.Illinois State Superintendent Tony Sanders told school districts to continue teaching Black, Asian American, and LGBT history, and to provide education to students regardless of their citizenship status as required by state law: “The study of events related to the forceful removal and illegal deportation of Mexican-American U.S. citizens during the Great Depression is American history. The study of the role and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people is American history.”

“In Illinois, we strive to affirm, uplift, and support all our students and their families,” Sanders wrote. Really Sanders? Please tell me how uplifting it is for girls to have transexual males (or males who merely “identified” as females) to be able to use the same bathrooms as girls, to change in the same locker rooms as girls, to play sports against girls. You were ok when the Biden administration threatened school districts with loss of federal funding if they did not allow transexual males in the bathrooms, lockerroms and on the girls teams but you have issues with actually… Read more »

Chalkbeat conveniently reframes Federal law as “Trump threats”.
Mr. Sanders conveniently ignores Federal Supremacy.
Mr. Sanders also has no problem commanding overtaxed Illinois citizens to pay the education costs for illegals.
FYI Mr Sanders’ 2023 salary is $243,056, so he’s a grifter with a nice racket going.
One question for this useless bureaucrat, what is the plan for when Illinois schools lose all federal funding ?

This guy looks like the typical guilty white lib that wants to focus on supposed injustice, hurt feelings, victimization and the evils of capitalism instead of teaching students useful information to find employment later in life. He’s a race trader in the classic, and lucrative, model.

You seem to think these goals are always mutually exclusive. I don’t.

Did you mean to say that you believe hurt feelings, victimization, and the evils of capitalism are appropriate topics for K-12 education? That’s what it sounded like.

There are good ways to do things, and there’re bad ways. Surely you understand that we’re talking about a topic where people have heated opinions on either side of a moderate balance. it’s the job of the superintendent to advise as to what’s politically doable since his/her job is the at most risk usually. I say that person should do something to promote human empathy and respect for people of a different striperather than nothing as you may prefer. “Your mileage may vary”

It’s the superintendent’s job to advise what’s politically doable? Can’t we agree that the superintendent’s job is, at a minimum, to make sure the students who graduate are literate? Where does politics figure into that basic requirement that is not being met?

In the world of education the head dude, the school superintendent, always has to attend to the local people who don’t like his leadership. In other words, he needs to thread the needle though a variety of strongly held opinions often said in a public forum. If that isn’t politics in the definitional sense it most assuredly is in the practical sense!

When Federal funding is pulled for noncompliance with federal law, then what Mr Sanders?

History is the academic field most defiled by commies, with sociology a close 2nd. But history by far is the most infected by the commie virus. “The study of the role and contributions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people is American history.” Um. No it’s not, not at all American history. It might be the history of communism in America but it’s not American history.

This is irresponsible and stupid of Sanders. Federal law supersedes state law, including state statutes. Some of what Illinois does is perfectly fine and perfectly legal. But insofar as what Illinois schools are doing conflicts with the Supreme Court’s new limits on racial preferences, state laws and practices must give way. Identifying that line is the challenge, but we know that the Trump Administration is embracing the strictest legal interpretations it can. If schools cross the line drawn by the Trump Administration, they may end up in court and lose federal funding.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
