Before the pandemic, chronic absenteeism in Illinois was below 20 percent. However, since 2020, the number has increased, with some districts still experiencing a rise. In Springfield, more than 5,000 students missed at least 17 days of school last year without a valid excuse.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
