In two years, Lightfoot’s plan to replace Chicago’s lead water pipes has switched out 280 of an estimated 390,000 service lines – Chicago Sun-Times

On the South Side, contractors move machinery used for boring underground as part of a new method of replacing lead service lines. Now, beginning in January, the city will be required under state law to replace lead service pipes every time there is a break or leak in a water line. That will force the city to replace what’s estimated will be at least 4,000 lead lines a year, perhaps 5,000.

These are the people who must control all speech and thought to save democracy. These geniuses must control our entire healthcare system. These Einsteins must centrally plan our economy for prosperity and more importantly, equity.

Early December. Great time to start a pipe replacement project. Also, isn’t the owner legally responsible to fix the pipe leading from house to city water conduit? Is any part of the problem deferred maintenance? I get it about the dangers of lead, but if someone buys a house with lead paint on the ceilings, or with mold behind the drywall, should the city pay the cost of tear-down and rebuild? Who pays to fix sidewalks that crumble? It looks like infrastructure is crumbling nationwide. Is this due to over-paying city workers so that there’s no money left for anything… Read more »

Lead service pipes are not disclosed on real estate transactions. Those other things you mentioned, mold and lead paint, are disclosed. Making the home buyer responsible for something they know nothing about makes no sense.

Replacing 280 lead service lines in two years @ $30,000 ea with city water dept crews and all their crazy work rules vrs a Newark replacing lead service lines @ $5,000 to $10,000 has nothing to do with systemic racism, equity, environmental racism, etc ?????? Where’s the outrage. Where’s questioning where the political donations from operating engineers have gone?? Why isn’t lead pipe replacement competitively bid to private sector??? And like everything in this city & state–what a complete outrageous pay-to play joke as once again the taxpayers are treated as absolute chumps.

And what’s even more outrageous, since city is using it’s own water dept crews for lead pipe replacement, you can bet your bottom $dollar$ if all those city workers pensions & benefits costs where included on an accural basis the $30,000 ea to replace lead pipe would only be tip of iceberg. A complete joke

So many of us here have grown up just fine with the referred to water systems and turned out just fine. Now its a crisis and while there are issues with the systems it seems that the situation has been into another must fix issue that keeps the public’s minds off the real problem that is the political mess this State is in

Who is more gullible? Those who believe in politicians’ promises or those who believe that laws will be enforced? Few of us believe what is spoken or stated in the media. I am skeptical about statements made under oath (or by their lawyers). And how often are perjury penalties applied.
