McDonald’s is using its packaging to promote COVID-19 vaccination. Gov. JB Pritzker tweeted this yesterday:
Obesity is a huge and under-reported part of the COVID story. Seventy-eight percent of patients hospitalized for COVID have been overweight or obese. In countries where less than half of the adult population is classified as overweight, the risk for death from COVID-19 was about a 10th of the levels in countries with higher shares of overweight adults.
Interestingly, obesity may even increase the risk of getting infected in the first place, since obese people have been found to test positive more frequently. And the effect of excess weight on the risk of severe COVID has been found to be greatest in young people.
In one sense, maybe McDonald’s packaging is therefore a particularly appropriate place for this, assuming you are confident that the vaccine is safe and effective.
On the other hand, we wouldn’t want to give free advertising to McDonald’s using COVID together with images of tempting fries.
So it’s seems to me that it’s fine for McDonald’s do be doing this with its packaging, but let’s not give them any free advertising for it.
And, by the way, if the goal is to convince people that vaccines are effective, it’s long time for Pritzker to ditch his pictures with a mask on.
With $162 billion more from taxpayers, couldn’t you deliver a few bond upgrades, too
