Labor allies target ‘at-will’ employment rules – Chicago Sun-Times*

The proposal, dubbed the Secure Jobs Act, would overturn in Illinois a longstanding principle in force in almost all states — that jobs are given “at will” and can be withdrawn without liability. The act’s proponents said at-will rules unduly affect Black and Latino workers.

In the name of “equity” almost any transgression, regardless of how damaging or vacuous, can be forgiven.

You know what? Do it. I left Illinois and I’ve been warning those I left behind to also get out. They can live with the consequences of staying and ignoring me.

Bingo. If you CHOOSE to remain in Illinois then you choose to suffer in agony.
Nobody is forced to remain in Illinois.

It is embarrassing that people still live there.

Mark or Ted:

What are the chances of this bill passing? Normally when sent to committees the bills are DOA.

Slim, I would think, but our government is now doing so many suicidal things that I wouldn’t be surprised if it moves forward, especially if some of the exceptions are expanded.

Well, if it passes as it stands now, which I agree it most likely won’t, then where I work will be gone for sure to another state. At least I will get out of here if it happens!

This bill has no chance of passing. Sent to rules and executive committees to die.

The ignorance of what this policy will do is absolutely astounding.

It is clear that everyone who promotes this has never owned a business, and has never managed an employee. They are trying to flip the meritocracy model on its head, eliminating the right to conduct your business as you see fit.

I already am aware that my business is effectively controlled by government, but this takes it to another level.

Price rises for everyone. If they think I’m going to go in the negative to pay for socialist policies, they have another thing coming.

The $20 cheeseburger is close.

at-will rules unduly affect Black and Latino workers

If 60% of the US Population is white, 12% of the population is unionized, and the percentage of unionized non-white workers skews higher than the average, then how can at-will rules unduly affect Black and Latino workers?

Do it – would be humorous to see the ‘Woke’ CEO’s complain.

It is crazy, but the obvious result of the progressive belief that people have a right to a job at a “fair” wage. If that is true, then it follows that no one should be fired from the job to which they have a right.

Next it will be racist for an employer to require anyone to actually work at the job they are entitled to.

Wow, this is really really bad idea. I honestly didn’t see this coming from right field. This might be the law that accelerates businesses leaving Illinois. The backers of this bill cite three people, one of whom is an illegal immigrant working under the table (daycare, threatening immigration), one who doesn’t speak english as a custodian, and the story doesn’t even mention the third person’ story, and this is the basis for upending literally hundreds of years of at-will employment. The stuff coming out of Springfield is truly scary these days.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
