Vermilion County Circuit Clerk Melissa Quick said the Circuit Clerk's office collects 10% of the bond portion the inmate paid. The small percentage then goes into a money pool making up about 70% of the funds to pay the attorneys, judges, and the agency who made the arrest needed in court.
Illinois used to have bail bondsmen who would pay the required bail for an arrested individual and then would charge about 10% of the bail as a fee for their services. The state eliminated the bondsmen and instead offered bail with the same 10% fee that the state/county kept as a processing fee. It made the whole process easier and eliminated the middle man, bondsmen. A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
