Legislation targets ‘smash and grab’ theft rings to create crime of organized retail theft – Center Square

House Minority Leader Jim Durkin filed House Bill 4275, which would create the crime of organized retail theft with a punishment of up to 15 years in prison if the value of stolen goods is more than $300. The Illinois Retail Merchants Association plans to introduce its own solutions.

Glad to see Durkin has joined the fight, albeit pretty late. With elections coming up, he is under pressure to show some action. Does he really think a $300 limit is going to do anything? Foxx won’t prosecute it, so it seems like a waste of time – something Illinois politicians rate first in their class.

It’s not going to pass anyway. Let’s count the days til the first politician calls it racist.

Something you won’t see reported on is the organized check fraud ring. The crooks have keys to mailboxes and they steal outgoing mail looking for checks. They alter the checks and deposit them with their mobile app. Real pain in the ass for businesses. They unsuccessfully hit us twice, where my daughter works several times. They even go into high rises dressed as mail carriers to steal outgoing mail.

Anyone writing checks is living in the Stone Age! Writing checks, stuffing envelopes, buying postage! You could be arrested for entrapment!

Dressing up as a mailman, stealing mail, cleaning checks! Why not get a job? You’re already doing all the work!

Personally I don’t remember the last check I wrote. A lot of businesses use a combination of checks and ACH’s. When we do a check run we send a file to the bank with check #, amount and payee. Any check that’s presented that doesn’t match won’t clear.

What happens if the value of the stolen goods is $300 or less? I guess there’ll be a lot of verbal scolding. Also, let’s see, if my gang wants to steal x thousand dollars of goods per month, and there’s a dollar threshold per incident beyond which my gang members will go to prison, that means my gang will need more smash and grab incidents to achieve the monthly quota. That’s simple math. Because of the violent nature of these crimes, any such incident should result in a severe punishment, regardless of the value of goods stolen. Innocent workers, shoppers,… Read more »

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
