According to a survey of more than 2,000 people from the River North Residents Association, more than 80 percent of them strongly oppose Bally’s proposal. But the mayor said in a tweet, “The Chicago casino will generate jobs for the City – guaranteeing 3,000 construction jobs per year & 3,000 permanent jobs. The casino will also support the police and fire pensions. Bally’s Chicago will be a luxury destination for residents and tourists all year long.”
Of course Ballys is all on board to having SEIU run the place too, right? People have a right to spend their money on weed, gambling, hookers… its their money its a free country. But in the end their habits are welcome when a massively in debt government has nothing left to claw back.

The chalked outlines of bodies in the parking lot will become a stand alone tourist attraction. Get on board the ghoul patrol.

Gambling is a classic regressive activity because it adversely affects lower-income people more than others. It’s horrible Chicago has sunk to this level.
Hey, if Illinois is selling weed and is running state sanctioned gambling via a Lottery, what’s a casino in Chicago in the grand scheme of things? </sarc>
James – one thing I do not like about gambling and which rarely gets discussed is the negative externalities which obtain. These externalities are real, impose real costs on all of us, and light is not shed on them with snark about morality. Costs are costs, moral or not. Moreover, as pointed out above, the collateral damage of gambling most often in the first instance falls on the lower and lower middle classes, although addictive gambling can attach to anyone. The governments clearly want the tax revenue, but rarely is there a balanced discussion over universal economic impact. I laugh… Read more »
Ultimately you usually can’t forever protect people or even effectively discourage people from acting as they wish. The heart wants what the heart wants, and all discussion otherwise is essentially just noise much of the time.
Let’s leave the dogs out of it. Otherwise, rock on!

Lori needed to locate the casino somewhere that wasn’t too awful, yet! If Lori had here way the casino would be in Winnetka.

When anyone thinks of Chicago, “luxury destination” is not what comes to mind.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.

Next prostitution, dog fighting, and opium dens. Think of the tax revenue.
Now, you’re talkin’. Give the public what wants. We don’t need no damn moralizing! Is this a “free” country or simply the veneer of it?
