Longtime Residents In Gentrifying Areas Battle Huge Property Tax Increases: ‘We Don’t Want To Leave’ – Block Club Chicago

Marco Trusewych is questioning whether he wants to hold on to his Logan Square property, a home that’s been in his family since 1959. The bill for the Diversey Avenue greystone went from a little more than $9,500 in 2020 to about $14,000. “I was hoping it would be my retirement fund,” Trusewych said of the home. “But I don’t know; maybe it’s my relocation fund.”

Taxes will go higher and higher. You do not like this then leave ASAP, hundreds of thousands have already. Taxes are high and going higher, services going to become nonexistent. Their is a generous pension time bomb going off and will be paid for generations to come. This is the largest generational theft in history. The cops, teachers and firemen have managed to steal money from the unborn children. And PPF is proud of that fact.

Why do you never mention the unholy alliance between politicians and unions which has now been enhanced with the passage of Amendment one? Or the pension ‘holidays’ taken by politicians? Or the perennial underfunding? Instead you attack retired law enforcement, firemen and teachers. Yet, you skip the retired politicians, judges, prosecutors and government staff. If politicians had been more interested in doing their jobs, providing for the welfare of Illinois instead of their next election, we wouldn’t be in this pickle. Put the blame where it belongs … but you continue to hammer on the retired first responders and teachers.… Read more »

You mention the unholy alliance between politicians and unions, absolutely correct. The unions have been backing the progressive politicians for decades. But now that the chickens are coming home to roost, the union members who voted for this for decades should not share in the burden? Not one dime cut from any pension? It’s only the non-union voters who should pay? I understand your concern and admire your compassion. It would not be fair to cut off pensions entirely. But it’s also not fair to put the burden on the current taxpayers of Illinois, while those who benefited have scurried… Read more »

Follow the money, cops, teachers, and firemen are who gets the most money. All the others only amount to a very small %%. The teachers’ pension fund is SHORT hundreds of billions of dollars. Teacher should be paid by performance, and they would only get a welfare check.

Chicago real estate values are at an inflection point. They’re caught between rising interest rates and the desire to get off the property tax treadmill while one still can. Soon a Cook County property address is gonna become a financial hot potato. No one is gonna want to get stuck owning one. Of course the flip side of everyone wanting to sell is no one willing to buy. How low can Chicago real estate values go? See Detroit where homes were sold for a dollar a while back in the forlorn hope that a real live taxpayer could be put… Read more »

Is it really misfortune when they repeatedly, decade after decade, despite the warnings, voted for this?

I had a detailed post that just disappeared, LOL. Pilsen, in the 25th and 11th wards, voted for Kaegi between 80% and 95%. It’s not just the hipsters, its almost the entire hispanic community too. I’d almost go as far as saying any vote against Kaegi is just a ballot reading error. Overwhelming victories for Kaegi. The residents of Pilsen voted for equity, good and hard. Equity in Pilsen means raising their real estate taxes while lower taxes in Black neighborhoods a few blocks south. Not sure if they misunderstood what equity meant, but that’s exactly what it meant. Hope… Read more »
