Jacobo Gomez, a migrant from Ecuador, plays on a soccer team with other migrants. Here, he’s about to pass to a teammate during a scrimmage Wednesday, June 14, 2023 at Chicago Indoor Sports complex. The squad is made up of asylum seekers staying at a South Side shelter. They will play in a tournament against other refugees from around the world who now call Chicago home. “I feel good because I did this in Ecuador, and I thought coming here I wouldn’t have the time,” Jacobo Gomez said, “I’d be too busy working, you know, chasing the American dream.”
