Migrants would move from police stations to big tents in ‘winterized base camps’ under mayor’s new plan – Chicago Sun-Times

Twenty-fifth Ward Ald. Byron Sigcho-Lopez (from left) and Mayor Brandon Johnson meet migrants staying at the Near West Police District station in May 2023.The mayor offered no specifics on cost or funding. Instead, he described the broad outlines of a plan that includes “base camps” that would provide meals and recreational and educational programming supplied by Chicagoans as a way to reduce what he called the “exorbitant” costs now being paid to a private staffing agency. Pressed repeatedly, Johnson did not rule out budget cuts or tax increases — or both — to pay for a burgeoning humanitarian crisis already costing Chicago upward of $30 million per month. The city will have to make “sacrifices,” he said, adding that the cost of not making those sacrifices would be far greater.

I see lot of cold weather sickness from people forced to live in tents. No big deal as they will then soon flood the hospitals to be cured of their ailments. The people of Illinois will suffer due to lack of available medical care but who cares? That is their problem. They voted for it by electing Pritzker and should be congratulated for getting what they wanted.

Pritzker had no competition in the election. If you voted for Pritzker, Pritzker would’ve won. If you voted for Bailey, Pritzker would’ve won. If you didn’t vote, Pritzker would’ve won.

The cost of sacrifice could be much higher? It would be much cheaper to fly them back south across the border!

This going to end up a disaster and killing people. Shame on the Chitty.
Putting people in tents during a Chicago winter is a death sentence.

I’ve been saying we needed refugee camps to house them while waiting for a hearing. But I never expected them to be in northern illinois.

Liberals never learn. The idea that policy choices are more than simple minded political slogans and that they have real world consequences escapes them every time…

Where is the ‘$30M / mo’ going? How is it being spent? What is the YoY increase? What is the pro forma expectation for next year?

You’ve probably been around long enough to realize that in Chicago, Cook County, and Illinois much of those millions end up in the pockets of politicians, their families pockets, their friends pockets and political supporters pockets. It’s the 10% for The Big Guy on a local scale.

Bozo BJ’s circus is in the air!

Mayor’s Office playbook apparently copied from San Francisco and Portland, failing to note both cities have consequently already devolved into absolute lawlessness and beset with “tent city” encampments everywhere.

Once institutionalized here by city-sponsorship of “recently arrived migrant” camping grounds, more ad hoc tent encampments will form everywhere, coming to a street-corner near you.

They’re taking over Humboldt Park and a lot more places. People are going to die when it gets cold. Propane heating, people occasionally passing out from substance abuse, and a flammable tent city is a recipe for disaster.

They will freeze to death. Hope the Mayor lives in the same tents.

His consultants on this one must have been Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey.

What was P. T. Barnums’ famous quotation on the gullibility of the typical American?

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
