“The legislation purports to help tipped workers, but it’s not, because it’s putting the restaurants they work at at risk,” said Michelle Durpetti, managing partner of Gene & Georgetti. Durpetti estimated that paying the full minimum wage could cost the steakhouse upward of $250,000 a year, and said everything is on the table: raising menu prices, implementing a service fee and even closing.

This is nothing more than laying the groundwork for unionization. You think a tipped worker will vote for unionizing, what could the union promise them that would make them want to unionize? Now if they’re an hourly worker the union could promise them higher wages so they would certainly want to unionize. This is their plan more BLOODSUCKING UNIONS.

Here’s prediction: many ethnic “mom’n’pop” neighborhood storefront restaurants will close. Many chain restaurants will jack their menu prices up even further, though realizing their customer-traffic will continue to decline due to higher customer-tabs. High-end white-tablecloth restaurants, those with mostly expense-account white-collar businessman customer-base, will raise menu prices further, see some drop-off in customer-traffic, but likely remain largely unaffected. Why bother tipping when your servers are making a very decent minimum wage? When you start to see the cost of menu items rise, you may start thinking less about eating out. Eating out will become an extravagance rather than a treat.

Right. Should there now be tipping at all in Chicago restaurants? Also, when you see the price of your meal just jumped 20 or 25 percent, you’ll be inclined to tip less or not at all, or eat in a suburban restaurant.
