A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.

If I understand this article correctly, Meta will get its power from other plants, which might emit dreaded carbon. But they’re paying Constellation to maintain Clinton so they can claim sustainability points, while other consumers use the power. This appears to be a good deal for Illinois ratepayers. Or do I misunderstand? Is something Exelonzy-sleazy going on that I missed?
I think that’s what Meta is doing with da Clinton nuke. Call it greenwashing so Meta can make claims how green they are.
Unless they release more details, an assumption of Exelon is probably a good place to start. When has JB done anything that benefits taxpayers or saves money? Expecting a behemoth AI/supercomputing firm to build power plants that don’t take taxpayer incentives and is ready to go day one without impacting the existing power grid seems far-fetched. Illinois legislature just passed on building another nuclear facility and instead chose to keep the old one that was slated to be closed. IL has proposed supercomputing sites to be self powering but it seems to be sitting in the Assignments Committee. The ink will be long dry on the deal with Zuckerberg before a bill requiring them to be self-sufficient is ever addressed. Who would monitor their usage to make sure they are compliant? Especially if legislators play games and run Illinois data through the processing center and claim that we need to shoulder the cost to run the state more efficiently. It should be required of Data centers and AI centers to construct their own power generating plants.
Exactlty and some are doing that.
