Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. It is sadly apparent that the obvious reason for this behavior and the equally obvious solution will continue to be ignored as being politically incorrect. The irrational fear of being labeled a racist prevents those remaining rational beings from saying the obvious out loud. Until you can truthfully identify the problem, there will be no solution.
Why were police there? I thought these things are handled by social workers. BJ said that give these youths jobs and they would act responsibly. This had nothing to do with ICE or the feds or immigration, yet shows there are a lot of excuses for violence and lawlessness in Chicago. Can Pritzker and BJ try to blame Trump for the shootings?
“From the wild Irish slums of the 19th century Eastern seaboard, to the riot-torn suburbs of Los Angeles, there is one unmistakable lesson in American history; a community that allows a large number of men to grow up in broken families, dominated by women, never acquiring any stable relationship to male authority, never acquiring any set of rational expectations about the future — that community asks for and gets chaos. Crime, violence, unrest, disorder — most particularly the furious, unrestrained lashing out at the whole social structure — that is not only to be expected; it is very near to… Read more »

Someone here a few years ago suggested that the COVID-19 protests, and the violence that followed, would usher in a new era of horrendous crimes unlike anything Chicago has seen in decades. That commenter appears to be correct. People on fire in the subways, mass shootings at downtown Chrismas events, and even serial killers are returning to Chicago. Keep safe folks, it’s a dangerous world out there. And that’s just in the past week.

Spending Billions on Public transportation to take people to downtown which no one wants to go anymore because it is NOT SAFE. One of the main reasons Ken Griffin left was because of crime. No one in government listened to him or they just did not care. If you do not count the Killings, shootings and armed robberies crime is down in Chicago. Who do you think did the shootings? CPS graduates, homegrown criminals.
There is something called a theory of mind, which is the ability to understand that other people have their own thoughts, beliefs, and emotions that may differ from one’s own. I know that YOU care about crime. YOU care about shootings and armed robberies. YOU care about keeping downtown Chicago safe. YOU think it’s important to maintain law and order, because that’s what Solon of Ancient Greece said nearly 2,500 year ago. But many people don’t think this way. There’s a large contingent of Chicago folks that don’t have the same cares, beliefs and values as you. They’re perfectly OK… Read more »
