Opinion: The paid leave policy is the latest threat to a restaurant industry under siege – Crain’s*

Table at restaurant near window "The 121 restaurateurs who signed this op-ed have invested in the city of Chicago, financially and emotionally, over many years. We ask for a government that manages with a scalpel instead of a sledgehammer. We ask for nuanced and balanced decision-making. We ask for a proposal that allows operators a chance to cure any honest mistakes without the threat of a lawsuit. We ask for more time and for a true economic study with the new PTO ordinance. We ask for a thoughtful pause from the aldermen whose constituents frequent our places, from an administration that wants everyone to thrive and from the entire work community that needs jobs.

Progressives want private industry to adopt same workplace benefits as exist in government, meaning above-average wage-scales, multiple paid minor holidays, generous and accruable allowances for sick days, personal days, and vacation days (resulting in months-long absences for long-time employees), paid six-figure annual pensions, subsidized health insurance and post-employment health insurance subsidies, et al. Note how government agencies routinely operate at both great expense and significant employee inefficiencies and incompetencies. Note how employee benefits are routinely abused by government employees, with little risk of reprimand or prosecution. Note how rampant government employee absenteeism, “ghost employees”, and sick-leave abuse, routine occurrences tacitly… Read more »

They can ask for it. But this is a far Left, 3rd world City and they won’t get it.

once again, the only jobs any of these pseudo-socialist aldercriders have had in their lives is at a non-profit or government gig. They’ve never had to worry about producing goods and services in a competitive economy.

Their primary focus is getting up on stage w AOC at dem national convention in 24 to build their careers in gov and claim they where part of some local progressive legislation. If the mom & pop taco joint on the corner goes under that someone invested their lifes savings in they don’t care. Your just collateral damage.

How many of these restauranteurs are registered Democrats? I’ll bet it’s a high percentage, so they voted for this. I have zero sympathy for these useful idiots.
I do sympathize with the non-Democrat restauranteurs, but the they need to face facts and leave Chicago. The Marxists are marking them and any other business for destruction.

Indirectly, they did. They continue to run a business in a socialist $hithole known as Chicago. They should have known better.

Interesting take and I agree.

The same applies to all the residents of the state when they complain about property taxes. They continue to run a household in a socialist $hithole known as Chicago/Ilinois. They should have known better.

Look at that we agree. You are indirectly responsible for the decisions that you despise.

There’s website I sometimes frequent relating to investment property ownership, and it’s common knowledge and an accepted fact that you don’t own investment property in Illinois and especially in Chicago. Avoid Chicago like the plague. Yes, investment property prices seem attractive on paper, but after factoring in the taxes and the business atmosphere, investments become toxic.

There’s a direct line from decades of Democrat voting to Chicago’s death spiral. All the ills of Chicago, every single one, are a direct result of the policies put in place by the Democrat politicians the voters put in power.
Every restauranteur who voted for a Chicago Democrat, or didn’t bother to vote, in effect endorsed this paid leave policy, so yes, they did sign up to get run out of business.

I know of one restaurant that has moved to the suburbs. Others will follow or move out of state.

Chicago Teachers Union contract demands are totally divorced from reality – Wirepoints

Details emerging about Chicago Teachers Union’s upcoming contract show just how divorced its demands, both extreme and expensive, are from the reality at Chicago schools. It’s not just about massive salary increases, but also about money for migrant students, climate initiatives, abortions and gender-affirming care. About blocking parental notification. Count on CTU’s demands to veer further from reality until the public finally says no.

Gov. Pritzker’s ‘ethics reform’ eliminates competitive elections and choice for voters – Wirepoints on AM 560 Chicago’s Morning Answer

Ted joined Dan and Amy to talk about a new law passed by the Democratic supermajority and signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker that results in brazen election interference, keeping Republicans off ballots; about a referendum that tests the waters for a renewed progressive income tax hike; about how the Parental Notification referendum question was knocked off the ballot; and why laws like that pass so easily.

Chicago needs more champions of literacy like Willie Wilson – Wirepoints

It’s rare to see city leaders in Chicago take an open, unabashed stance on the collapse of literacy. To complain is deemed as too political, too racist or too anti-public schools. So it’s refreshing to see Willie Wilson, a successful businessman and leader of the black community, call for a literacy initiative “with the goal of getting 100% of Black students reading at grade level.”
