Proposed legislation would make Illinois compliant with a 2023 U.S. Supreme Court decision stating property owners are constitutionally owed the surplus equity in their homes after a tax foreclosure due to unpaid property taxes. While the legislation makes its way to the floor, there is still the issue of this spring’s anticipated tax sale.

“Illinois is the only state that has not yet formally changed its property tax sale rules to align with the Supreme Court ruling, according to Kirvan.” Illinois legislators can pass all kinds of dumb laws but they cannot seem to do something they are required by law to do.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
