Plans to raze and replace Stateville prison get public hearing – Center Square

Department of Corrections Acting Director Latoya Hughes said current Stateville employees can work elsewhere after the prison closes. “Should staffing patterns hold, the department estimates that approximately 1,000 Illinois Department of Corrections positions are available within a 65-mile radius,” said Hughes.

Stateville imprisons the worst of the worst offenders in Illinois. Brown’s chicken murderer James Degorski, and years ago, Richard Speck. The point of the prison is punishment, and the facility is supposed to be decrepit and filthy. The average sentence for anyone housed there is IIRC 40 years to life.
