The new legislation would amend the state’s school code to make it illegal for school personnel to involve police to issue students citations for incidents that can be addressed through a school’s disciplinary process. “We have to close that loophole and end school-based ticketing,” said Rep. La Shawn Ford. “There is no place for this type of system to be in our schools.”
I believe this is what he was elected to do. As I’ve repeated said here, getting ‘tough on crime’ means ‘arresting and incarcerating more BIPOC/minorities”. The black community, for the most part, is opposed to arresting and incarcerating more black people. Their solutions to crime mostly involve, let’s call it…..self-help…which is why few in the community cooperate with police to prosecute crime. Guys like LaShawn and Brandon Johnson have progressive ideas how to solve crime, like this school administrative process, or Healing Houses, and social workers. A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
