From what I have read in articles quoting medical officials in Africa, the omicron variant may be more easily transmitted, but it is also less virulent. The media in this country rarely mentions that second piece of information. I wonder why?

This article badly overstates it. The preliminary evidence reported from South Africa that I have seen is that prior infection provides LESS protection against Omicron, but not none. See https://abcnews.go.com/Technology/wireStory/study-suggests-past-covid-infection-fend-off-omicron-81539019. And the evidence is preliminary.
