I can see this from their perspective. Most of these protesters have way below average conflict resolution skills. They have a son, father, brother, relative or friend who thought it would be a good idea to resolve a problem with a gun. Someone ends up dying and someone ends up going to prison, but they think they were justified. Now you have a cop trying to make an arrest and a criminal ends up dying.
