Wirepoints' Ted Dabrowski said the improvements are exclusive to K-8th graders. Dabrowski also pointed out that SAT scores are down, but high school graduation rates are up. "The graduation rates are whatever they want them to be. They can set standards and just let kids graduate. What’s really egregious about this is how they are bragging about graduation rates being at 88 percent, but you look at the results of high schoolers, you look at SAT scores, they’re bad,” he said.
At the local State and Community Colleges there are now classes that cover high school writing, mathematics and science that are non credit but qualify for financial aid. Colleges now contain a population trying to learn what they should have learned, at continuing taxpayer support. Keeps the individuals gainfully occupied and off the street I guess as they continue the path of getting an Illinois Certified Rocket Scientist or Brain Surgeon Diploma

It’s disingenuous to celebrate higher graduation rates in Illinois when national test scores for Illinois students are down. In line with this disingenuous behavior, the Illinois fix could be to lobby to move the goalposts for the test scores; e.g., a 500 score on an SAT test would become 550 or even 600. You know, whatever it takes to make the Illinois public education system look good.

Pritzker should be ashamed that schools are graduating students that can’t read or do math at grade level. Stop promoting students who do not meet the criteria for advancement to the next grade. Start teaching the students.

Excellent article, I agree this is all inside information and can be manipulated very easily. Graduating is different than learning.
