Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Is the $2000 limit cumulative per year, per month, per event? In other words can I steal $1900 dollars worth of stuff daily, or is that just yearly? Law can be such an ambiguous thing to an engineer, help me. Also when I’m checking out my stolen goods will the store add up the total for me? Who comes up with the value of goods stolen, how can we trust the stores not to just lie and say it was over $2000? Per event. So go out and steal $1900 a day, sell on Fakebook or Craig’s List and only if the retail price is over $2K will the felony charge be allowed. If you have been convicted 10 previous times for theft then the felony rule will kick in. In other words, steal as much as you can and you will never suffer any consequences because lost likely you will never be convicted 10 times for retail theft.

Maybe they should amend the proposal to require that you give the offender 48 hours notice and get an appointment to execute the search warrant or arrest warrant. After all, do we really want to inconvenience the criminals or interrupt their illegal activities?

Honest question: When were the $300 and $500 limits set? I mean, $500 today isn’t the same as $500 in 1980. Obviously, raising the limit at $2,000 is drastic. But what’s dangerous about this $2,000 threshold is that the theft of cell phones and laptops are now misdemeanors. So expect more personal property theft, not just retail theft.
Years ago like in the 80s limit was $150.00 Then they jacked up to 300 and 500 I think in the 90s

$500 in 1990 is around $1,000 today. A reasonable argument could be made to raise it just on that fact alone. Instead, they pick a random number.
