The Chicago Teachers union doesn’t just want 9% annual raises, they want that and even more – Wirepoints on The Shaun Thompson Show
Ted joined Shaun Thompson to talk about about the Chicago Teachers Union’s absurd new contract demands, why so many Chicago teachers are chronically absent, and Brandon Johnson’s failed first year as mayor.
The people of Southern Illinois must think Chicago lies at the bottom of a hill. All their taxes seem roll there.
They think that because they are ignorant to the fact that they are beneficiaries of city and suburbs of Chicago. They pay so little in taxes that they couldn’t possibly help Chicago. It’s like when people say that rich people got that way from taking from the poor. Down state voters need to say thank you from the handouts and quite complaining. Bunch of choosy beggars.
I think you got your north and south directions confused. Oh, thats right, it’s not a handout up north its equity. They don’t complain, they riot and loot. Your murder city is coming to a suburb near you and the LOL governor JB and his stooges one of which is mayor big stick will be held accountable in the next elections.
Spending money on public worker pensions (south of I80 prisons and colleges) should not be characterized as “giving money to the poor”. Southern Illinois cannot attract development to grow and prosper because the State of Chicago has developed so much public debt and Illinois government has terminal malignant corruption. Lumping suburbs with Chicago is your opinion but not shared by many trapped in suburbs. Collar Counties residents must subsidize Chicago, and suffer in so doing. The largest method is through property tax rates which are extreme outliers in Illinois and nationally. Extremely high property tax rates cause property values to… Read more »
Bill,
Chicago would freeze and starve to death without downstate. You should give it a try.
I also like central and southern Illinois.
Unfortunately, we have a LOL governor JB just as recently as (8/26/21 press briefing on Covid) blaming the people of southern Illinois for overloading the hospitals and problems remaining in congregate settings. How many times did he take a victory lap on nursing homes only to send out strike forces throughout Covid. One Illinois is lost when a Lack Of Leadership governor JB does that to the people in his state. How many more people in our state must die by his actions and not just from Covid!
Chicago and Democrats view everything south of I80 as a serfdom, meant to pay tribute to help prop up Chicago.
The point is that if majority of Illinois land area, and potential productive land/population wants to survive the corrupt Illinois political industry, it should look for alternative solutions that might actually work.
Secession will not be allowed by political class.
What is legal and doable:
You can’t defeat the well-fed beast, you must starve the beast.
Would an electoral college type system work to alleviate the unfair advantage N/E IL has…?
Fix the Democrat cheating first.
While it would have possibilities the gerrymandering would have to stop meaning once again great plans go down in flames in Democrat controlled Illinois
Who cares what the rubes think or want south of I80. Most of the people and money come from the Chicago area. Why should our money and efforts be spent on these backward thinking rednecks. We already send too much money to these people and all they do is complain about Chicago. It’s like a poor relative complaining about where we are going for dinner but never brings his wallet to help pay. Be grateful I fed you and sit down and keep quiet. Bunch of ingrates.
I know, right? They only grow all of your food!
We already provide farm subsidies. Now these rubes want to have their votes count more than the rest of the voters simply because they take up more land mass. People vote not land. These down state voters are takers and they want more from the makers. Their survival is built on socialism all the while they complain about socialism. Complaining about taxes while grazing at the trough is their past time. Some real choosy beggars.
Isn’t it a bit more subtle than you make it appear? Rura/low population l areas everywhere cannot benefit from the same economies of scale, of, for example, a Lake County. So providing a baseline level of government service will cost more per capita in rural areas. Everywhere. My brother the very well known economist reminds me of this factor when looking at any kind of maker/taker analysis. Now. your argument may be the baseline ought to be lower, but I don’t think ignoring the notion of economies of scale is helpful. Moreover, I am not sure that characterizing cities like… Read more »
So rural areas cost more per capita? So if it’s more expensive to provide services to those areas then those taxpayers should pay more in taxes per capita. If they can’t afford it then they should move closer to a city. These people want to have the benefits of being subsidized by the city and suburbs as well as being far removed from the issues of city life. Not only that they believe that all the money goes to Chicago not understanding that they are true takers. If it cost more to live in the sticks then these people need… Read more »
LOL, Bill at Fox Bend is all for defunding Englewood, Austin, Roseland, Pullman. Takers, all of them, according to Bill at Fox Bend. They don’t deserve a seat at the adult table. Go tell that to the south side aldermen!
You obviously did not understand the issues surrounding economies of scale. Could I ask what is your education?
Maybe those rubes are better at playing your game than you are.
What was the point of this article? Downstate is white and doesn’t like abortion? Is the sky green and does IL grow soybeans? What else is new.
It really is two different worlds. I can get to Des Moines, Detroit, or Cincinnati in the time it takes me to drive Chicago to southern Illinois
Some of my North Shore high school classmates (admittedly not anywhere near our best students) went to Southern Illinois University It was a funky place then, and these students said southern Illinois was so different from the Chicago area that it was a true out of state experience at then cheap in state prices. Today the glow politically and culturally has worn off of Southern Illinois – especially with the demise of coal. And the university’s enrollment has been cut in half, not a unique thing in Illinois public schools. It is now not much different socio-economically than swaths of… Read more »
You’re right, that poster, and most of the commenters there, have absolute contempt for conservative voters.
Absolutely see that attitude at capital fax. They all had ideas of how to keep money from flowing to southern Illinois, such as closing prisons. Unfortunately I have to assume a lot of the posters on capital fax work in our state government. When the state fair was going on there was hardly any activity at capital fax.
“It is now not much different socio-economically than swaths of West Virginia” Yup, outside of Champaign and Bloomington – Normal, that is a pretty apt description of all of downstate Illinois, e.g. dead old industrial towns, shrinking rural populations, lots of poverty. And like SIU, Western Illinois University and other schools have had catastrophic enrollment declines. Downstate IL is not an especially attractive place to start with (or is *any* place in IL!), so the spiral downwards continues…
The directional schools in Illinois are simply not appealing to suburbanites. If you’re gonna travel that far, might as well go out of state and get an entirely different climate and cultural experience.
That’s why they got rid of the SAT for these schools. They’re scraping the bottom of the barrel for students altogether. Met an intern from the IL suburbs the other day who went to UW-Whitewater of all places, she would have gone to NIU, ISU or EIU in any other era. But she left the state, doesn’t plan on returning upon graduation.
