The settlement nationally requires significant improvements to how Walgreens and CVS pharmacies dispense opioids, according to a release. The $10.7 billion settlement will be divided among the signed-on states, local governments and tribes.
I don’t understand how CVS and Walgreens are responsible when the company Purdue was making false claims about the degree of addiction which was close to zero according to their sales reps. Did Walgreens get the same info as the doctors did? Pharmacists cannot prescribe drugs only advise patients on how to take the RX. If the pamphlet says OxyContin is not addictive that’s all the pharmacist can say. Why not also hold them responsible for all the side effects known and unknown for all the other drugs? No one accused CVS or Walgreens of making false claims. The argument is that pharmacies should have noticed when opioid Rxs were being filled with ever increasing volume. In some parts of the country, pharmacies were filling so many Rx’s that it didn’t match the total population of the customers that they served. They were accused of turning a blind eye when they clearly knew the volume was off.
