Why, sometimes I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.
Alice in Wonderland

Governor Rauner, your own party’s legislators already think you’re dishonest and every one of their votes is critical to you, yet this is your strategy?

Rauner’s new ads paint his primary opponent, Rep. Jeanne Ives, as “Mike Madigan’s favorite candidate,” an opponent of property tax freezes and a supporter of higher taxes.

That’s so preposterous that seven of Rauner’s fellow Republicans, each a member of the General Assembly, issued a press release yesterday calling on Rauner to halt what they called his shameful distortions and fraudulent ads. An example is a mailer I received yesterday, copied below. Ives is precisely the opposite of what Rauner says.

The scary part is that voters probably will believe it, even if every legislator knows otherwise. “We’re all mad here,” said Alice in Wonderland Illinois.

UPDATE: Greg Hinz at Crain’s wrote with the same reaction, and the Illinois Tea Party has been tweeting the same thing. Credit Rauner for bringing unity to Illinois.

Jeanne Ives is Illinois’s last hope.

Rauner’s attack ads aimed at Ives enhance Ives’ credentials. Based on her many years in the Ill. Gen. Ass., Ives knows that progress in repairing Illinois’ deadly financial condition depends on cooperation of Madigan. Similarly, ads attacking Biss for his attempts to address the fundamental problems in Illinois’ fisc — the five state pension funds… Read more »

The real reason Ives is Madigan’s favorite candidate is because: Madigan understands that it’s going to be a lot easier for JB to beat Ives in November. Madigan wants Ives to be the Republican nominee so the Madigan machine & JB can destroy her.
That is their path to victory.
Then they control the map after 2020 census, which means it’s all over for IL until 2030.
That’s what Rauner should be saying.

Wrong. Rauner’s negatives are so high that even a crook like Pritzker would beat him easily. A clean candidate, with consistent principles like Ives would thump Pritzker.

I’ve gotten a similar card from the Rauner campaign for the last six days in a row. All I see in bold letters is Jeanne Ives. Good enough for me to keep her in my mind.
