Rebuilding I-290 could boost economy, reduce travel times and improve safety, new report says – Chicago Sun-Times*

“Not only is this interstate among the most congested in our nation today, but when it was constructed there was little regard for the lives and livelihoods of many people in our state,” Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch said in a written statement. “We must modernize this regional transportation hub and promote economic development. But more importantly, we must do it the right way by reconnecting our communities and repairing the racial inequities and displacement caused by the original construction.”

Since roads, highways and bridges are racist according to Transportation Secretary Buttman it seems that the proper thing to do would be to reroute 290 thru the northwest side where many cops, firefighters and city workers live. Racist highway eliminated!

290 is not interstate transportation, improving it wouldn’t bring in a dime, its like an economy where we all just do each others laundry, a wash. Whereas true Interstate improvements would bring investment. Actually the cancelled Illini Tollway would have boosted the economy of Illinois. Highways wont bring investment to Illinois. The tax structure, unemployment taxes, workers compensation insurance, favored unionized labor pool etc etc etc

Can I be against the infrastructure bill be but for rebuilding 290? That highway is pretty old and it’s always congested.

What about making the lanes narrower. This way you can make 3 lanes into 8 or 9. All it would take is some paint. Maybe 4 feet wide (3 feet if you need more lanes). What could possibly go wrong. Kramer on Seinfeld made them wider but that caused some problems.

What neighborhood will be sacrificed by their alderman for a construction debris dumping ground?

Rebuild as in add a lane between Oak Park and Hillside. Hard to believe an extra lane or rebuilding the Homan Street overpass will boost the economy like they think it will.
