Rich Miller: A law that extends prison time for major weapons charges hasn’t cut back gun violence as promised. Should it continue? – Chicago Sun-Times

"...(T)he Senate is set to take up a bill (SB 853) that would extend several statutory sunset provisions, including those (Unlawful Use of a Weapon) changes made in 2017. The law had been set to expire in January 2024, but the proposal would extend that deadline for another year. This could be an interesting debate and a political temperature check on the General Assembly. Illinois politicians have taken a lot of public heat over crime and the criminal justice reform bills they’ve passed."

charles in charge – Monday, Oct 30, 23 @ 9:42 am: ==the defendant is only going to spend about 60 to 75 additional days behind bars.== The idea that this law has been ineffective because it didn’t ramp up incarceration *enough* is exactly the wrong lesson. The truth is that increasing penalties for existing crimes has never worked to reduce future incidents. Sentencing enhancements are simply the easiest tool for elected officials to reach for in order to claim to have “done something” about any given problem and then move on to something else. It’s easier and quicker than doing… Read more »

AS to Rich Miller. he has an interesting site with a lot of information. I suggest reading it. But be warned if you try to make a comment that he does personally not like (that means a well balanced middle of the road or somewhat conservative) he will not publish it. Or he will try to make fun of it in a snarky way (and his little sycophants will join in). If You respond he will definitely block it. Miller is a true BIGOT. Intolerant of anyone to whom he does not agree with.

Cabrini Kim Foxx won’t approve of that idea. Restorative justice is the name of her tune.

JB Pritzker’s stomach parasite slithers out from between Pritzker’s greasy fat folds to parrot his master’s words. Tell your master this: Prison time isn’t about rehabilitation but justice for the victims. Major weapons charge criminals should receive the death penalty so longer prison sentences are an alternative to execution. Reduction in gun violence isnt the point; its about the victims. BTW Miller, when you immediately downvote this comment be reminded that you can’t control the Wirepoints readers like you control and censor your brainlessly loyal crapfax minions.

Wow. Miller must have 12 separate Wirepoint’s email identities for a 12 downvote hissy fit in less than an hour. This is quite funny. For those who don’t understand the tyrannical left’s deep need to censor any and all opposing views I submit this infantile explosion.

Wow. Tommy the Ghost is a total idiot. He thinks you need an email address to vote up or down. It is quite funny how stupid Tommy boy thinks. For those that don’t understand how dumb Tommy boy actually is I submit his moronic theory of voting on an anonymous board. Different email identities. Bahahahaha. What an idiot.

Not everyone thinks Rich Miller comes to this website and downvotes. You don’t need to know the intricacies of the internet to not be a complete moron. Tommy the Ghost is an idiot.

The lady doth protest too much, methinks”. 12 down votes in an hour is borderline psychotic.

Tom Paines Ghost makes a lot of sense up to a point. Certainly prison time is about punishing the victim and getting them off the streets, However “Major weapons charge criminals should receive the death penalty so longer prison sentences are an alternative to execution” is not good common sense or justice. Non parole Life imprisonment would be appropriate for murder cases and severe sentences of 10 years or more for violent crimes using weapons would not be out of line

Well Rich, with your article in mind, do you think gun control will work too? Governor Pritzker, who you seem to favor, is all about gun control so, as we know you read here, what is your position on gun control considering your article?

LOL Disingenuous Rich a moron. The guy holds an umbrella and claims it’s not raining out because he’s still dry. He makes no mention of Kimmy’s failure to prosecute gun crimes which is the driving force being gang violence. He says ‘black’ men are put in jail longer but doesn’t mention exactly how many of those 1,400 black men were actually given longer sentences. Rich is seriously such a idiot. I’d say this to the man’s face and heckle him if I ever saw him in public. I’d post a video on youtube of me heckling the man if I… Read more »

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
