Rich Miller: Springfield’s unwritten rule kept lawmakers from banning assault weapons – Chicago Sun-Times

"The votes to pass one have seemingly been there in both chambers, but the will of past Democratic leadership seemed to be to not overtly poke any big, cash-rich bears, like the National Rifle Association, or to alienate or electorally imperil conservative members of their Democratic caucuses."

2/3rds of IL counties have declared themselves 2nd amendment sanctuaries. Do you think IL counties will enforce these gun laws? And when they refuse, is the governor going to start using state police to arrest sheriffs and attorney generals? Do you think the southern 2/3rds of the state will secede from the state? What if they just stopped sending money to springfield and refused to recognize the authority of the state? What if Kentucky took them without getting first approval from Congress? This is a political hot potato that SPringfield is getting itself into and they either dont’ realize it,… Read more »

Illinois purchased more guns than any other state in the union during 2020, 2021 and 2022. Now they want to ban many of those guns AND make criminals out of nearly every resident who owns a magazine that holds more than 10 bullets – which is virtually every magazine sold in Illinois. Do you understand what they are doing? THEY ARE USING THE LAW TO TURN THEIR POLITICAL ENEMIES INTO CRIMINALS. They are weaponizing the law against conservatives, their political enemies, to turn them into criminals, to put them away in jail. Do you think kim foxx will dismiss charges… Read more »

So the big brains in Springfield want to ban common weapons that hundreds of thousands own and use legally and at the same time let criminals walk free with basically no ramifications for the criminal behavior?
No thanks. I will pass on that insanity.

The point of the law is to make YOU into the criminal. They hate you. They want you in jail or out of the state. They’ve doing this to punish you. And nothing will change their mind.

“the will of past Democratic leadership seemed to be to not overtly poke any big, cash-rich bears, like the National Rifle Association, or to alienate or electorally imperil conservative members of their Democratic caucuses.”

In other words, the Democrats’ constituents don’t want to ban “assault weapons”,

What exactly is an assault weapon? From what I can see the people in charge in Springfield are assault weapons. They keep trying to assault my Constitutional rights.
Ban them!

What’s missing in the whole ‘assault weapons’ discussion is comprehensive definition of the term.

Laws are being written and/or considered by individuals who either don’t know about guns and/or those who are too lazy to learn more about weaponry.

BTW: write all the laws you want about handguns and remember … CRIMINALS DON’T FOLLOW THE LAW, LAW-ABIDING CITIZENS DO. Therefore, you numbskulls in government, are working to disarm the WRONG GROUP.

The point of the law is to make YOU the criminal. Illinois residents purchased the most amount of guns of any state during the pandemic. Now our legislators want to turn all of those gun owners into criminals by banning their clips and making possession of otherwise lawful gun a crime. They’re doing this to punish their perceived political enemies. This is only about one thing – punishing their enemies and turning them into criminals

Considering the ‘soft on crime’ posture already in Cook and scheduled to be the law of the state, they need ‘easy pickings’ to arrest and prosecute, to make it look like Kim Foxx is doing her job.

What’s easier to arrest and prosecute than law-abiding citizens who don’t have a defense attorney on speed dial?

Critics cited violent gun crime for a reason to ban certain rifles and handguns. Illinois had 1151 reported homicides in 2021, Chicago had 855. Less than 300 statewide among 11+ million residents. The state does not have a violent crime problem, Chicago does. What a great idea to turn thousands of innocent, law abiding, tax paying, contributing members of society into felons because a firearm they own and have owned for perhaps 30 or 40 years is now a crime. Put bad people in jail, don’t pass laws like the SAFE T act. Punish the criminals not innocent, non violent,… Read more »

They’re punishing you, the law abiding citizen, because they hate you. YOU are their political enemy. You supported Trump. You are a white supremacists nactzee. They want to ruin your life and put you in jail and destroy your livelihood. They’re doing this because they hate you. There is no other reason except that they hate you. They’d put you into death camps if they could. They’ll fill up our prisons with otherwise law abiding citizens for merely possessing an AR-15 because they hate you.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
