Sales tax may be an unlikely hero for Springfield budget – FOX55 (Springfield)

At the beginning of the pandemic, it looked like the city would lose close to $15 million dollars. Just last month, the projection was $10-12 million. And now, $8-10 million.

If folks are spending their unemployment on merchandise with a 6.25% sales tax instead of rent where the landlord would have paid 5% income tax, the overall gain for the state will be minimal.

The Federal government was paying people $600 a week for four months on top of regular unemployment benefits, which resulted in some earning more unemployed than employed. And the state passed a law prohibiting evictions. How many were spending the $600 a week to buy stuff instead of paying rent? Now they can apply for state grants to cover missed rent. In other words government subsidies stimulate current retail buying and thus sales tax revenue to the City of Springfield. Meanwhile Federal and state government debt grows. Agreed.They are probably buying the lastest I Phone. That extra money should have been directly applied to rent. What about getting some property tax relief? Teachers are declaring themselves non essential and probably will not teach in a classroom until a vaccine or a Covid cure but are all getting paid with raises to boot. In the meantime my 2nd installment is due for my 2 rentals and primary at approx $9.5K and already owe about $12.8K for next year. I would like some property tax reparations or at least a reduced school tax.
