The county has seen a decline of about 1,000 residents over the past decade, with the most significant drops in the 5 to 19 and 35 to 49 age groups. County Board Chairman Andy Van Meter pointed out that this trend diverges from national patterns. Van Meter also emphasized the importance of job creation and business growth in attracting and retaining younger populations.

It’s bad enough that Illinois does everything it can to drive out businesses and productive citizens, but another issue is that downstate Illinois is dreary and declining and just generally sucks…
Add in that the counties largest city, Springfield is rife with crime ( both inside and outside the capital dome) , a high unemployment rate and many welfare recipients. As with CHI, Decatur, Peoria and other blue oaises, who wants to live there that doesn’t have to? The tumble in population in Joliet is a prime example as most new arrivals there don’t want to be counted and avoid being so.

Illinois has been losing population every year for a while, looks like it will continue as taxes keep going higher and business keep leaving. There is no stopping tax increase with the current pension debt as it is, they must go much higher to survive.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
