Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. And yet if that store clerk hadn’t unlocked door and allowed the gangbanger into Bottega Veneta boutique, we’d have another screaming “racist” headline decrying “racism at Oak Street boutiques”. Bottega Veneta, Dior, Chanel, and the other international boutiques won’t be renewing their leases. Their established customer base is unwilling to visit stores; now the in-person “shoppers” are in fact gangbanger Drill Music rappers and said gangbanger shoplifters.
