I vacationed in Boston last year. When I was checking into our hotel, the concierge mentioned that while he was taking a cross-country trip with his friend during the pandemic, he was carjacked in Chicago.

Sure. Every major city has crime and Chicago is no different. Chicago is safer than Rockford when you look at the rankings. Safer than Indianapolis, Nashville, Milwaukee, Cleveland, Memphis, St. Louis, Detroit and many others.
Chicago is a great city. Still with plenty of economic opportunity for those with the drive and ambition to succeed. Plus all the frightened suburbanites that are afraid of their shadow stay home and out of the way.

Carjackings, shootings, muggings, and theft tend to frighten people away. Many suburbanites aren’t afraid of their own shadows but don’t want to be victims of these crimes, so they avoid being in Chicago or drastically reduce their time there. Just because Chicago is safer than some other cities doesn’t mean it’s safe.
