Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. If you’re an Illinois Democratic Machine politician, used to “feeding at trough” of ever-flowing cash, or a “community activist”, used to generous governmental cash subsidies to your “community programs”, it seems elemental to keep crying “we need to fund new XYZ!”, “ABC is underfunded!!”, “we need to provide free blab-blab-blab!!!”. Yep, it seems that tap of endless ever-flowing “free cash” has no limit. Except, when Illinois wins the dubious prize of “state w/most overtaxed middle-class residents”, with property taxes, already highest in country (maybe NJ still higher, maybe not), and those taxes still rising, year-for-year, via both rate-increases and assessment… Read more »

Like a conspiracy of fools.
