Abolishing REACH (Recognizing Educators Advancing Chicago’s Students) is one of the remaining sticking points holding the union and CPS back from settling on a new four-year contract.

From the many war-stories I’ve heard from lived-experiences at CPS schools from a retirement-age CTU member-CPS teacher, it’s nearly impossible to get fired or “pushed out” of CPS employment. A teacher must commit a serious offense to get fired. Worst-case scenario, a teacher will get reassigned to another school, or to “rubber room” assignment outside of any classroom. A CTU CPS teacher can go AWOL for months, and be fine. But get fired? Huh.

  1. Perhaps there should be one or more Reach Coordinators at every school to help these teachers improve their attainment of the “Goals.”. We’ll pay them extra because they’re teachers’ teachers. Add a couple more layers of appeals or perhaps Summer Reach Training at Resort in Vermont.

Yup. It’s a shame the race card has been so overused; it’s become a cliche. Like the car alarm everyone ignores, knowing eventually it will be turned off.

When genuine racism occurs, who is going to pay any heed?
