Target in talks to replace Macy’s in Water Tower Place, which one local official calls ‘embarrassing’ for Chicago’s Magnificent Mile – Chicago Tribune*

“How embarrassing is this to the city,” Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said during a radio interview. “I’m trying to figure out what is magnificent on the Magnificent Mile about Target? It’s disgusting...You don’t put Target next to Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and everything else on Oak Street. It’s a no-no. It demeans the quality of Michigan Avenue."

Who wants to shop where you have to pay a fortune to park and walk around with 30 pounds of stuff you bought for miles? One time my wife and I went to a Nieman Markus and we were shocked that they had no chrome shopping carts to wheel your purchases around in, they actually expected you to carry them! Besides stores and office buildings are obsolete, everything is delivered now and office workers work from home.

You won’t have to carry 30 pounds of stuff around once the muggers steal it

Mag Mile Water and Tower Place will be lucky to get a new Dollar Store or Ross for Less. The destruction was quick, remedies will take generations.

Mayor Lighthead letting her “community” rampage and destroy businesses on the Mag Mile demeans Chicago!

Perhaps going soft on Antifa, BLM, looters, and rioters; being authoritarian on business owners and shoppers; piling on taxes and regulations; and hiking public sector pay and benefits while pensions were already underfunded was not a winning strategy.

Let’s form a task force to figure this out.

There’s still room for Wal-Mart and the Dollar Store because Target is not going to take up 8 floors.

Chicago has lost the economic base of high end and possibly all retail in Chicago. Lori and particularly Sophia King, chair of the Progressive caucus, as well as those in the black caucus has made it perfectly clear that ghetto rioters, looters, and criminals are allowed to do whatever they want as long as they vote democrat. Wildings have been allowed for years as have gangs of black youths causing trouble and attacking white shoppers. This has all been allowed by Lori, Kim Foxx and Sophia King. Sophia King engineered the removal of the Columbus statues because that was demanded… Read more »

Good for Maria Pappas for phrasing it that way.. It is a great summary of what the Dems have done to the City. And what a tragedy that has happened to a world class retail district on North Mich. What’s next– a pawn shop in the Wrigley Building? Maybe a snow blower repair shop on Oak Street.

Does it matter to shoppers if they are attacked outside of a Target instead of Macys? What am I missing?

Funniest comment of the day.

Mendoza is a snob who thinks she’s too good for Target.

It’s Maria Pappas . Get it together. She’s 100% correct.

This the Chicago that the peeps want. Last summers riots, car jackings muggings. This is what the result is. Chicago has made their bed.

Ms Pappas appears to be unfamiliar with the food at the diner in a Target.

Well, Treasurer Pappas, that’s not a very equitable opinion.

The tribune and the Lori, Kim Foxx sycophants in the media will soon be calling pappas racist to erase her. She’s the best choice for a mayor I’ve seen in a long time. We’ve had enough of a racist, hateful, angry, ugly freak whose only way of dealing is to play the race card or hype her lgbtq credentials. Lori must go.

Truth in Cook County

Boy, Pappas is out of touch. The quality of Michigan Avenue was already demeaned last summer when our city, county and state leaders allowed BLM and other criminal elements to go their thing on the mile, with very few arrests. Now we have a new law which is anti police and lets the criminals return to the street immediately. The quality of the Mag Mile experience is likely gone permanently. Those who do return will likely figure it out once they are stripped of their valuables or a gun is stuck in their or their kids face.

The magnificent mile is over thanks to i and the black caucus of the city council particularly Sophia King who encouraged and allowed the destruction in exchange for votes.

It strikes me that Pappas has not yet understood the new reality. High end businesses don’t expect stores in locations like Magnificent Mile to generate lots of profit. Rather the stores are there to promote a brand in a high end location with panache. Forget that after the destruction of last year. Michigan Avenue won’t recover. The bigger question is whether the Loop, River North, and so on will recover. Crime can have a devastating impact in areas such as these. I see gloom in the future.

I worry about the Floyd trial. It seems that ingesting large amounts of fentanyl was the cause of death. Of course, this doesn’t mean that the police acted lawfully, just that they weren’t the cause of death. This distinction will be lost on the media and the woke, so I fear more violence.

Let’s see if Twitter and Facebook block the misinformation in the interest of preventing violence. Perhaps it just depends on where the misinformation comes from.

Floyd overdosed . End of story. Why do we saint these animals in this country? Brown, Garner, Trayvon, Laquan all got whet they deserved.

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Audio here.
