Tax-by-mile bill stalls in Illinois. – State Journal-Register (Springfield)

The text of the bill reads that "the revenue currently available for highways and local roads is not adequate to preserve and maintain existing infrastructure and to provide funds for improvements that would incorporate safety factors, eliminate travel related injuries and fatalities, reduce congestion, and improve service. The General Assembly further recognizes that the gas tax is an ineffective mechanism for meeting Illinois' long-term revenue needs because it will steadily generate less revenue as cars become more fuel efficient and alternative sources of fuel are identified."

So why did Pritzker take money out of the highway fund?

So he could claim to have balanced the budget. Move money from one account to another, claim it as income, and you got yourself a balanced budget!

OF COURSE the gas tax will remain in place PLUS tax by mile. It’s not an either/or but is a both/and. Jeez. This is Illinois and the primordial sewage ooze that are Public Sector Unions demand this from their puppets in the IL Democrat Party. To these vampire ticks there is no amount of taxation that is too much. The more important question is is there a website or consultant who can advise on screwing Illinois out of their taxes? Is there a way to register my car via post-office box in Wisconsin? Same for my cell phone. My business?… Read more »

Nothing should pass without also immediately eliminating current gas tax and toll roads.

It doesn’t matter. IL will collect what it needs from residents to fund its Mismanagement Machine. If the VMT fee is enacted while the gas tax and tollway fees go away, make sure you’re wearing your seat belt when you find out what the VMT rate will be.

I have to call BS on this. It is a total cash grab. The only reason they want to implement this is to pay for other programs. They will have a flat rate based on the national average that people drive. If you put a device on your OBD II connector so big brother can watch every thing you do then it might be less. So it doesn’t matter how good of gas mileage you get or what BS they give you about lowering congestion or better mileage cars. The state will find a way to waste money.

They realize EV’s won’t be paying taxes for gas, and although they tear up the roads more than gas vehicles , our state can’t figure out what to do

How much is the current gas tax ? And they say that it is not enough? I suspect that no amount is ever enough with the people running the states transportation system.

Oh, it’s plenty of money as it stands. How do you think they managed to take 300M(?) from the repair funds for broken bridges and worn out roads and give it to other “ progressive programs “?

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
