On the table right now is a House bill (HB 5799) that would pull $200 million from the state's Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for rebates to customers of downstate utility Ameren Illinois. The bill won't be acted on until the legislature reconvenes in November. But rates in Ameren's service area appear unlikely to decline by then.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
