Last year, the City Council of this perennially cash-strapped metropolis unanimously rejected a proposal by Mayor Brandon Johnson to raise the city portion of property taxes by $300 million. This year, homeowners face a $500 million property tax increase anyway, even though the city’s take remains essentially unchanged. New assessments have shifted the burden from downtown commercial properties to individual homeowners, and other taxing entities have asked for more money.
A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
