The city of Chicago would need help running its own grocery stores, experts say – WBEZ (Chicago)

Phil Lempert, a grocery and food trends expert based in California dubbed the “Supermarket Guru,” said he loves the idea but has doubts about its sustainability. “Unless there is state or federal funds that can offset whatever losses,” he warned, “it’s probably not going to succeed. It’s not just about having a grant once. You’ve got to have commitment for 10 years in order to make it work.”

The ongoing, huge cost of inefficiencies of city-run grocery stores due to mismanagement, shoplifting, looting, etc. won’t be an issue to most Chicago pols because it will be offset by increasing Chicago taxpayer subsidies.

The idea of a city grocery store is laughable unless the city wants to outsource the city grocery store to pick-n-save or something, which defeats the entire purpose of a city running a grocery store! However, the idea of bulk food distribution directly to the poor in not unrealistic. Many countries distribute bulk allotments of food either for free or heavily subsidized to their citizens; India gives out bulk allotments of rice and many middle eastern countries provide free or subsidized grain.
