At the 2022 Socialism Conference, a new generation of radical young organizers revivified the US left. Especially visible this year were left-wing magazines like Lux and groups like Dream Defenders, a Black-led, Florida-based group committed to moving society “away from prisons, deportation, and war—and toward health care, housing, jobs, and movement for all.”

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. The state’s existing buyout program for its own pensions is the precedent for Chicago, which should be a warning: Look out for similar exaggerated claims and shoddy analysis.

They’re not freaks, just ugly. I mean, look at that crowd. It’s not an attractive group. And soft. Has anyone in that group ever lifted a dumbbell? I can think of one word to describe them: unhealthy.
And I say this as a person who could give two damns about appearances. But no wonder they’re always angry. If you had to wander through life looking like you were going to an audition for the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man or a corpse on Law and Order, you’d be mad too.

Like most socialist roadshows, the participants are overwhelmingly white. Don’t be deceived by the cover photo: the few people of color in the front row are standing in front of a sea of white people behind them. This is a common theme for DSA media: find the few Black or Hispanic people at the event and put them in all the photographs to appear diverse. The reality is socialism attracts mostly angry white people who, I’d wager, are mostly employed in the same public sector they wish to overthrow.
