At one point a beacon of academic excellence and point of pride for West Siders, Douglass’ low enrollment is now unsurprising to students and neighbors, they said. It’s indicative of the disinvestment West Side residents have suffered for generations, which has led to an exodus of local kids going elsewhere for school. Chicago Public Schools said Douglass is not in jeopardy of closing, even though the high school is spending just over $68,000 per student compared to the district average of $18,287.
An entire building, with Principals, assistant Principal, business manager, secretary, nurse, custodial staff, etc. for 35 students. So typical of criminal government and school districts. School districts are the worst run government agencies ever. Always broke and always bad.

Chicken or the egg. Do we wait decades for declining enrollment to possibly turnaround and continue investing too much in a declining product or do we close the school and reallocate limited resources elsewhere in the school district? If we close the school, will the neighborhood ever turn around or will it continue to decline?
The people who bemoan these school closures need to ask themselves if they alone (ie Chicago residents) are willing to pay much higher property taxes to support under-enrolled schools in declining areas.

33 students? So what? What’s important is how many CTU parasites are employed. That’s all that matters to the CTU terrorist organization.
Probably more than students. You need principal/assn’t principal/teachers/assn’t teachers/temp teachers/groundskeepers/bus drivers/cafeteria/maintenance/heating/secretaries/office workers to name a few.

Hmm, BJ should direct the CPS to do some consolidation. This would eliminate duplication of effort and right size the CTU. A rebate cheque for property taxes paid would then be forwarded to Chicago residents that paid property taxes.
I left the CTU education game in the 1980’s but while I was there, the school board tried to consolidate Fenger HS with Carver HS. The plan failed because of rival gang affiliations, socio-economic differences and aldermanic interferences. US Secretary of Education called CPS administration “a blob”.
