Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension. Maybe all those underemployed and unemployed union members of the Teamsters, Food and Commercial Workers, Hotel staffs, Curtain Hangers, Carpenters and Electricians ought to ask their union bosses who they supported last time around. Pretty simple to check their endorsements and political contributions. Every single one of those unions supported Pritzker and Lori- plus the entire Dem ticket. Tough to feel sorry for those workers when they don’t have the sense to look for a change.
I just happen to know a little about this. The unions themselves supported Democrats – obviously, but the rank and file members mostly supported Trump, as crazy as that sounds. But those guys are not working now, and haven’t in months, and they aren’t paying union dues either, and it’s bleeding the unions dry. The private sector unions are hurting big time right now with these kinds of shut downs so the good news is that the beast is on a major diet. There isn’t quite as much money for private sector unions to make political donations to D politicians,… Read more »
Orlando is open
And a much better place to visit
Well, it certainly is another kick in the teeth to those of us in the convention business that have been holding on by our finger tips. Thank you Illinois demoncrats.
If you want opportunity in the tourism & convention business then move to Indiana
Four words—–Pritzker and Lightfoot’s fault!
It’s not covid, it’s blm and wildings, looting, carjacking and enabling the south and west side ghetto types. We reap what we sow.
Part of the convention bureaus problem is that they allow union workers to interact with their customers. Most conventions poll members about their experience and where to book next years shabang. The first time I ever encountered a union rigger at a McCormack place convention he stopped me from setting up our booth LAN, monitors and computers. Later they made us buy a case of water from them at twenty times the cost of the Ice Mountain cases we got from Wal mart. Now when my my company polls me if they should come back to Chicago, what answer do… Read more »
The expense used to be worth it because Chicago had so much to offer to conventioneers. Now, with closed businesses, high crime and car jackings, unsafe public transit and dangerous hotels, the high cost of Chicago conventions no longer provides the value.
Chicago- Rotting away slowly. Thanks Democrats
Who would be stupid enough to have a big conference or trade show in Chicago with rampant unchecked violent crime?
Revenue? We dont need no stinkin’ Revenue.
We were in Miami a few weeks ago, no masks for the most part. 10’s of thousands on the beach, no masks. poolside, no masks, walking the boardwalk, no masks, hanging out in the lobby, no masks, restaurants, no masks. These people have taken back their freedom. Florida is thriving. Beautiful environment, impeccably clean streets and buildings, smiling people, hotels that make Chicago’s best hotels look like decrepid 1930 flop houses. Yachts parked along walkways lit at night as Palm trees sway. And a planeload of European tourists coming in from over the Atlantic every two minutes or so. No… Read more »
Looks like the Tribune is pushing fake news again. Their headline blames losing these 2 conventions on COVID-19. This article says housewares cancelled because of state restrictions and government restrictions. No such restrictions in Florida, and last I heard they had COVID-19 back in the day too. So it is our government, not the virus. That newsroom can’t be shut down quickly enough.
Get woke, go broke.
Why would any show come here to have it’s people attacked, robbed, carjacked and being subjected to animal like behavior? Lori was very clear about picking the rights of blm and the criminals over the taxpayers in exchange for votes.
These shows may never return unfortunately….
Of course they won’t return as Illinois circles the drain but it is what the voters want. LOL otherwise they would vote differently.
Excellent point, this is exactly what Chicago voted for, they must want this to happen.
