The University of Illinois Springfield will charge 2 percent more. Both the Urbana-Champaign and Chicago campuses will see tuition go up 2.2 percent. The base tuition for full-time, in-state undergraduates will be $12,992 per year in Urbana-Champaign, $11,424 in Chicago and $9,840 in Springfield.

On the U of I website (admissions.illinois.edu) current tuition at Champaign-Urbana is listed as $17,600-22,900 and room and board at $14,500 – a 30% difference. Many Illinois taxpayers know when they are not getting value for their tax dollars – only 55% of undergrads are from IL, 61% of grad students are international (news-gazette.com). It clearly isn’t a flagship “state” school and taxpayers see more value and affordability sending their kids out of state. A largely unasked question is becoming glaring: Is Illinois doing all it should to use artificial intelligence to make government cost less and work better? So far, the evidence says no.
