There is very little expectation of excellence in the Illinois public university system. U of I is obviously a well regarded school, but alums complain about their fall in the rankings. But the other schools generally speaking, just don’t perform well. Take NIU. 40 years ago, if you asked me what school was poised for regional prominence, it would have been NIU. It’s proximity to Chicago alone made for a promising future.
