Unreliable Speed Cameras Line Government Pockets – Reason

According to the Chicago Tribune, in the first two months since Lightfoot's new speed limit rule, the city racked up $11.3 million in fines. The total tickets issued in those two months totaled 327,447. Compared to those same months in 2019, the city only issued 19,480 speeding tickets, making an almost 17-fold increase.

Speed cameras are like crack cocaine for politicians. They can’t get enough of that revenue. Soon JB will issue an executive order to install cameras in well to do suburbs, insisting that they pay their fair share.

It’s the only dependable revenue stream. She’ll double down for the children and install more. Lori’s a hero, she’s saving lives. Teens and young adults need a safe environment to beat tourists in the open street.

I have not driven in any part of Chicago for over two years. But when I did I never, ever dared to turn right on red. No matter how much they honk. The city once sent me a ticket for right on red, I learned my lesson. Not that I’ll ever set foot in Chicago again.

And Butedgeedge wants to line the highways with these things.

No proof — but I expect the law-abiding middle class pays these fines in order to avoid bureaucratic hassle when renewing plates and drivers’ licenses while the scofflaws ignore the so-called laws and seldom experience their enforcement. Warrants are about as threatening as arraignments or littering citations under the contemporary “rule of law.”

Mark Glennon on AM560’s Morning Answer: Chicago pension buyout plan mostly shifts debt rather than eliminating it, property tax surge doubles inflation over three decades

Chicago’s political leadership is floating a pension buyout program as evidence it is seriously addressing the city’s thirty-six-billion-dollar unfunded pension liability, but Mark Glennon, founder of the Illinois policy research organization Wirepoints, said that the proposal moves debt from one column to another rather than reducing it, and that the broader fiscal picture facing the city continues to deteriorate across every measurable dimension.
