It “could” or it “would?” Perhaps the University of Chicago should educate students on realities instead of unproven pie in the sky daydreams of college professors.
I get what you’re saying, but isn’t part of the college experience about exploring ideas, even the ones that seem a bit idealistic? Sure, practical knowledge is crucial, but maybe there’s value in those “daydreams” too. They can inspire innovation or solutions we might not have considered otherwise. Could it be about finding balance between the theoretical and the real-world applications?
Would really like to know if these students interviewed any housing providers before they came up with these “bold solutions.” Again, I suggest anyone interested in affordable housing read 91 Ways to Create More Affordable Housing which can be found on the Illinois Rental Property Owners Assn. website. Their suggestions make sense. By the way, it makes me mad that only lip service is paid to encouraging small landlords or three-flat owners. “ Unburdened “. The last person that used that terminology proved to be nothing but a scatterbrained, DEI hire. “ Affordable housing “ is newspeak for Section Eight housing in most cases, and it quickly becomes a blight on the rest of the community.
Private property is private property, as long as property taxes are paid and the place is not falling down, no one should have any say about usage. These students mean well I’m sure but this is just one more idea that limits what landlords can do with their own property.
Did these students ask for feedback from the Illinois Rental Property Owners Association (IRPOA)? Go to the IRPOA website and read 91 Ways to Create More Affordable Housing. Oh yes let’s listen to students who are “unburdened” by real-world experience and business smarts. The problem of affordable housing is a complex issue, and it won’t be solved by taxing the crap out of landlords who have already been beaten down in Illinois.
